Why it’s Not Easy to Quit Smoking

You have probably heard stories of people who would like to quit smoking, but are unable to do so. You might have a friend or a relative who has that sort of problem. You might even be having that sort of dilemma yourself. Quitting the habit of smoking really is not the easiest thing in the world to do and there are several reasons for that.

Effects of Smoking

In order to understand why it is so hard to quit smoking, you have to realize first the effects that cigarettes and tobacco in general has on your body. It contains nicotine, which is actually a poison but in the small amounts that can be found in cigarettes, it acts as a stimulant. The substance makes you feel more alert. In some ways it can also make you feel calmer allowing you to focus your concentration. It can also act as an antidepressant which means it has the effect of elevating your mood and making you feel happy at times.

Nicotine in the Body

Like other substances that can be abused, we can become dependent on nicotine. The body can become used to the presence of nicotine and over time it would see it as its normal state. When that happens, your body will start craving for a smoke. That is when you cannot go on for long without getting a smoke. You will start feeling uncomfortable if you do not get to smoke and the longer that you do not get to smoke the worse would be the feeling.

Part of the Routine

Another reason why it is not easy to quit smoking which does not require scientific understanding is the fact that it is a part of your routine. People who develop a smoking habit normally make it as a part of their everyday life. It is something that they get used to. It becomes something as casual as drinking coffee or taking a break. So giving up something that has become a part of what you do on an everyday basis is not something that you can do with ease.

In order for you to be able to quit smoking you must start following some new routines. You have to find something that would replace smoking in what you do every day. Others try eating something like peanuts or maybe chewing on a gum.

Undergoing Therapy

Perhaps the best way that you can really give up smoking is by undergoing some form of therapy. An expert can help guide you on your way to totally being free from smoking. One of the most valuable help that they can provide is by advising you on how you can gradually lower the amount of nicotine that you are taking in.

These are just some of the things that you have to keep in mind when you want to quit smoking and you are being discouraged because it seems so difficult. It really isn’t easy but you have to stay true to your purpose.
